Five arrested at Extinction Rebellion protest outside MP Andrew Constance’s office

A 63-year-old man allegedly superglued his hand to the office of Bega Liberal MP Andrew Constance during an Extinction Rebellion climate protest on the south coast. Police have arrested five protesters outside Bega MP and NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance’s office, including one man who allegedly superglued his hand to the front door.
The protesters allegedly linked to the global environmental group Extinction Rebellion, placed a pile of woodchips outside the office to draw attention to native logging and climate change. NSW Police said they were called to the MP’s office on Carp Street in Bega at 8.30am on Tuesday.

“Officers attached to South Coast Police District attended and located two men and a woman on roof of the building, while a third man had allegedly superglued his hand to the front door of the office,” police said.

“A group of other protesters in attendance were given move on directions.”

A 60-year-old Bega man was arrested and taken to Bega Police Station where he was issued an infringement for failing to comply with a move on direction. A 63-year-old man from Tarraganda had his hand released from front door, before he was arrested and taken to Bega Police Station. He has been charged with malicious damage, resist arrest, refuse/fail to comply with direction, use intimidation/violence to unlawfully influence a person, and wilfully prevent free passage of a person/vehicle, police said.

Police said a 53-year-old woman was taken down from the roof and arrested at 12.45pm. She was taken to Bega Police Station where she was charged with use intimidation/violence to unlawfully influence a person, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse, refuse/fail to comply with direction, and risk safety of another by climbing onto a building/structure.
She has been granted conditional bail to appear in Bega Local Court on June 29.

Police speak to one of the arrested protesters in Bega. Two men – aged 21 and 28 – were removed from the roof by police at 1.20pm before being arrested and taken to Bega Police Station. The younger man has since been charged with use intimidation/violence to unlawfully influence a person, enter enclosed land without lawful excuse, refuse/fail to comply with direction, risk safety of another by climbing onto a building/structure, and wilfully obstruct officer in execution of duty, police said.
Charges are expected to be laid against the 28-year-old man.
